The Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA ), Hon Prince Ikim, has shown the commitment of the Agency headed by him in the fight against flood in Uyo, the state Capital.
The event which took place on Friday, October 8, 2019, Mr Ikim supervised an ongoing gutter desilting exercise at Oron road in Uyo.
Mr Ikim said, “In the last one year, we have discovered blocked gutters and other drainages to be the major causes of flood in our city, so we are here to ensure that gutters along this Oron road and other adjourning streets are all disilted to ensure free flow of water. This exercise is a continuum and we will ensure that all gutters in other flood prone areas are desilted.”
Recently, it could be recalled how flood has overwhelmed some areas in the city of Uyo and it has been observed that dirts trashed in gutters has been the major causes of floods in the city Uyo.
Despite the world class standard of drainage instituted by the previous admission to curb flooding, citizens are advised to dump refuse at the refuse sites to avoid blocking gutters that will cause flood.
The waste management Boss however, called on all citizens and residents of the State to assist the Government by also clearing the gutters around their environments, avoiding street trading and dumping of refuse in the gutters, adding that anyone found guilty of these acts will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
