Mr Idongesit Nkanga, the chairman of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and a former military governor of Akwa Ibom State, is dead.
He died in an undisclosed hospital in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state on Christmas Eve, his political associate and a family member told Information Drillers, on Friday morning. His wife, Funmi Idongesit Nkanga, his Personal Assistant, Mr Wilson and other family members have all been reportedly quarantined in Uyo.
There are speculations that Mr Nkanga died of COVID-19. but Information Drillers is yet to verify this speculations.
Mr Nkanga died at the age of 68.
As the chairman of PANDEF, Mr Nkanga was very vocal in the campaign for the restructuring of Nigeria and the development of the country’s Niger Delta region.
ThisDay published on December 24 an interview it had with Mr Nkanga where he talked about non-completion of the East-West Road which is meant to link together the states in the Niger Delta.
He also talked about the refusal of oil companies operating in the Niger Delta to relocate their head office to the region.
He said “You see this East-West Road that people have been dying, for how many years? It was later that I found out that even when I was Governor, in my address when General Babangida came to Ikot Abasi because I took him to that bridge linking Rivers State, that bridge was not there, that road was not constructed by the way it is now.
“The road that was there from Port Harcourt was constructed by the Shagari administration. There was no bridge, people used to go by boat. When he came to commission ASCON, I took him there and I said if we can have this bridge, it will help us. In my speech close to 30 years ago, I spoke about East-West Road. You can imagine how long ago we have been talking about that road. Till today that road is not complete,” he had said in the interview.

Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (retired) was born in 27 January 1952. He is an indigene of Nsit Ibom Local Government, Akwa Ibom State. He was a Nigerian former Air Commodore until his retirement in the Nigerian Airforce.
He was the governor of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria from September 1990 to January 1992 during the military regime of President General Ibrahim Babangida, handing over to an elected civilian Governor at the start of the Nigerian Third Republic.
Idongesit Nkanga was appointed a member of the board of the Cooperative Development Bank in May, 2001.
In 2002, he was seeking to be candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP) in the 2003 elections for Governor of Akwa-Ibom State.
In 2007, Nkanga was appointed Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Airport Implementation Committee. The International airport was opened on November 26, 2009. Although the primary focus was on cargo traffic and airplane maintenance repair and overhaul, the airport has started serving commercial local passenger flights.
As an elder of the Ibibio people, Nkanga was a strong supporter of Akwa Ibom former Governor Godswill Akpabio.
In January 2010, he was a member of the South-South Elders and Leaders’ Forum. Discussing the issue of handing over from the ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, he said the issue was not a North-South one, but was about following the constitution.
The late politician was an elder in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he has been a part and parcel of the cabals that has been installing Akwa Ibom State Governors since the inception of democracy in Nigeria.
He died on 24th December, 2020 at the age of 68 following complications from COVID-19. Idongesit Nkanga died before the eve of Christmas Celebration.

Late Otuekong Idongesit is dead, he dead on 24th December 2020 from complications of Covid19 in an undisclosed hospital in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
